Two of the major contenders that allow you to publish your own book from the comfort of your home are LuLu and Amazon (though a quick search will find you more), and these offer a great way to make money with no risk.

To use the sites you will simply need a PDF file which can be either mostly text – if you want to make a novel or ‘how to book’ – or mostly pictures if you want to make a calendar or children’s book. Either way, whatever you include in the PDF will end up in the final print. Other than that you will benefit from preparing a high definition cover image and setting up a PayPal account.

From here you will then be able to decide on a type of binding, a price and several other factors. Almost any format is available and you can use these services to make anything from a floppy back comic, to a hard back tome, to CD, to a novel. You will also be able to decide on the price you want your book or product to sell for, and this will of course need to take into consideration the printing costs and a slight fee from the POD company and should be competitive but profitable. If you choose to purchase an ISBN number this will then require an upfront investment, but will greatly increase your marketing options.

Once you’ve selected these options your ready-to-print file will be prepared and you will be provided with a storefront from which you can sell your products. Publishing your own book couldn’t be easier these days, and even if you don’t sell a single copy you won’t risk losing any money.
